Skin Care For Spring

Juverne MD, Dr Sonam Yadav spoke to Courtney Leiva at Total Beauty about getting your skin routine prepped for spring. Here's what she said.

▪▪▪

In winter we need thicker more hydrating products to seal the skin barrier to limit water loss by evaporation; as well as damage to skin by colder temperature. In spring the chill is mostly gone but there is still a wind and an increased incidence of allergies (mostly pollen related).

Thus in spring the need is more to soothe skin and protect. Winds draw water faster from the surface of skin. Thus lipids seal moisture in skin. Also, dry skin cracks easily and has stronger reactions to any allergens (especially in areas where particles collect, like upper eyelids and the scalp)

1. Thickness: Switch from the heavier creamy butters and balms, to lotions and light oils. Keep the gels for summer, yet.

2. Ingredients: Look for lotions with anti inflammatory and anti itch ingredients like oat extracts, zinc, copper, thermal spring water; vitamin E for barrier repair.

3. Sunscreen is important daily, through the year but you can switch to a lighter spray if creams start to feel too sticky.

4. Diet: Eat fresh, local, seasonal produce and include good fats like avocado, nuts, seeds, oily fish in your diet (these help maintain skin integrity) & stay hydrated.
